Philips updates Cinema 21:9 line with 58-inch Platinum series

Philips Cinema 21:9 Platinum series LED TV

Philips has been teasing us with the promise of the 58-inch 3D capable Platinum Series Cinema 21:9 TV since IFA 2010, but the company finally looks set to deliver. Showing off the new set at IFA 2011, Philips revealed plans to launch the cinema-proportioned TV in September. The Platinum series boasts an ultra-wide 21:9 (2.39:1) aspect ratio and 2,560 x 1080p pixel resolution panel.

Calling the Platinum series display the fastest LED screen in the world, Philips has given it a 1200 Hz "Perfect Motion Rate" with 0.5 ms response time, along with a 10,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 500 cd/m2 brightness and local dimming LED backlight. There's also Philips' Ambilight Spectra 3 that projects a glow of light matching the color and brightness of the onscreen image from the sides and top of the TV onto the wall behind it.

Philips is also touting the Cinema 21:9 Platinum series as the first cinema proportioned Smart TV, with integrated Wi-Fi providing access to online content. It also lets users stream content from a tablet, smartphone or PC over Wi-Fi. Meanwhile, Multiview lets content from multiple sources be displayed on the ultra wide screen at the same time - watching TV while surfing the Web, for example.

Philips' 3D Max technology uses active shutter glasses and an integrated 3D Max transmitter to offer Full HD 3D with a 180-degree viewing angle. Additionally, Philips says its Perfect Natural Motion engine can process two billion pixels per second to ensure sharp and smooth motion in 3D.

The company is also introducing real-time 2D to 3D conversion across its range of TVs and the Cinema 21:9 Platinum series is no exception. Philips also adds the ability to customize the depth effect of the 3D once the content has been converted. Through the use of the Philips 3D gaming kit, two players can also enjoy full screen 2D gaming on the one screen at the same time using 3D glasses.

So how much can you expect to pay when the Cinema 21:9 Platinum series LED TV becomes available in Europe this September? Around EUR4,200 (approx. US$5,950).

Toshiba's 55-inch, Ultra HD, glasses-free 3D TV

Toshiba 55ZL2 - 55-inch, glasses-free 3D TV
Toshiba has taken the wraps off a 55-inch, 16:9 ratio LED backlit TV with glasses free 3D capability and Quad Full HD resolution. That's a massive 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, or in other words, four times as many pixels as a 1920 x 1080p TV. We've just checked out the Toshiba 55ZL2 on the floor at IFA and the consensus is that it looks great.

Billed as the world's first large-screen glasses free 3D TV, the 55ZL2 is designed to allow several viewers to watch 3D content from different positions. Its CEVO-ENGINE calculates multiple wide-angle viewing zones in front of the lenticular screen and face tracking operated by the remote control is used to detect the viewers' actual positions and optimize the nine viewing zones.

The CEVO-ENGINE also handles Auto Calibration which Toshiba says achieves "studio level picture quality" and personalized settings - including the volume level you last had the TV set to - can be stored for up to four users.

Content can be recorded to an external hard drive via USB, SMART-TV functions allow access to Toshiba's Places online platform, Resolution+ converts lower res formats into Quad Full HD resolution and if you have an iPhone, you can download an app and throw the remote control away.

The 55ZL2 can also display 2D content at the Quad Full HD resolution.

So how does it look? Our first chance to see the screen in Berlin today definitely left a positive impression - the 3D image had much smoother depth than the "cardboard cut-out" effect on other glasses-free units we've seen, bringing us hope that the reign of 3D glasses will be short lived.

Overall the 3D effect was more subtle, natural and real, with crisper images that seemed to recede into the background rather than jump out at you. In short, it's comfortable to look at.

Of course, native 3D content in Quad Full HD resolution might be a little hard to come by for a while, but the 55ZL2 could well be a new benchmark for the industry.

"It seems like a step towards maturity for the entire market," says Gizmag's Tim Hanlon. "I can't see the downside. This is a pretty sick TV."

The Toshiba 55ZL2 will be released in Germany in December 2011. Release dates for other European countries are yet to be confirmed and there's no word yet on how much it will cost.

Plasma TVs

We at Best TV know there is plenty of speculation regarding to the technology of plasma TVs, some true and some false. Here are a few of the most common mistakes about plasmas:
1) Plasma TVs Do Not Last Long

This is an extremely common plasma TV myth. When comparing plasma to LCD technology, they are pretty much dead even. Plasmas currently have an average lifespan of around 60,000 hours (give or take a few thousand). If you were to watch 4 hours of TV a day, the display should theoretically last over 40 years, on a medium contrast setting.
TIP: when your TV is shipped to the store or to you, it is usually set at a very high contrast level (for the showroom). So when you open your baby up and take it out, be sure to navigate to the menu and turn down the contrast ratio.
2) Plasmas Are Expensive
In some cases, such as the largest, highest resolution top-end models. Fortunately, technology has allowed the price of plasmas to dramatically lower in the past 10 years. Plasma TVs have comparable costs to LCDs, and as the screen size increases the price is actually sometimes lower than an LCD with the same screen size.
3) Plasma TVs Give Off Harmful Radiation
Best TV laughs at this claim, this is about as far off as you can get. The only trace of detectable radiation can be found up to an inch away from the screen. CRTs (the most common household TV) give off a significantly higher amount of radiation. The pixels are individually illuminated, so the radiation is kept within the specific pixel. Plasma and CRTs should pose no threat to your health – they comply with the FDA guidelines for radiation emission.
4) The Higher Resolution, the Better the Picture
Save your money. The only reason you would want to spend extra money on a TV with 1080p resolution (top-end) would be to watch Blu Ray movies or play Blu Ray games. Watching regular TV on a 1080p TV looks no different than a 720p or even a 420p (TV is generally broadcast in 420). Also, most movies are made for 720p resolution or lower.
5) Plasma TVs Leak Gas
Modern Plasma TVs in no way, shape, or form leak gas, or need to be refilled. I don’t know how many times I’ve heard that in my life. The TV’s pixels are permanently enclosed in sealed glass cells, and are filled with a harmless gas mixture. There is no way for the gas to escape, meaning it cannot leak out and does not need to be refilled by any means.

LG 32LH35FR: 32-inch LCD TV

Tuesday, 14 June 2011 0 comments

Not everyone has a big living room to adorn it with a 42-inch LCD TV and so today we have something a little smaller and more affordable from LG. This comes from their 35FR series, which can be considered as an update to their previous LF20 series. Looking at the 32-inch models from both the series we find that they share very similar features except for the USB port present in the newer 35FR series. All seems to look good as of now, so let's see if this performs as well as it looks.
Let us just go over the basic specifications; this 32 incher supports a 1920x1080 resolution, IPS panel, 80000:1 Dynamic Contrast, 4ms response time, DivX through USB, 3x HDMI jacks and so on.
The remote this time around is smaller and the buttons actually have a better feedback compared to the other remotes from LG. There is a distinctive click feel to it which makes it more ergonomic.

Highlights Channel Master 4228HD Long-range Outdoor HDTV Antenna

Sunday, 12 June 2011 0 comments

1.Designed for high quality HDTV digital and UHF reception
2.Ourdoor installation - Unfold, mount, and connect
3.Long-range reception up to 60 Miles (120 miles w/ preamplifier)
Thinking about a killer 600 pounds gorilla – that would be the Channel Master 4228HD in the long-range outdoor HDTV antenna world – so called the EXTREMEtenna!
As the most powerful HDTV antenna ever, the Channel Master 4228HD antenna is the top one of the newest long-range outdoor CM4000 series. What it does is driving the formerly weak and unobtainable UHF stations to you screen suddenly and sharply.
And we are seeing it working reasonably well on those high-band VHF channels (above channel 6, especially channel 9-13) as well – it’s not applied to other great UHF equalizers.
The receiving range of the Channel Master 4228HD long-range outdoor HDTV antenna can be up to 60-70 miles or an amazing 100-120-mile range with a good preamp or control amp, so much better than most of the so-called “all-channel” antennas.
Of cause, to get the crystal-clear show on your TV you have to spend some efforts to get this 4228HD gorilla properly installed and functioning, rather than just plugging in some wires to a set of rabbit ears.
The first thing you need to do is to mount it outdoors. Don’t mount it inside your garage or it won’t work well. And to get the best of its performance you want to position it as high as practical and as far away to the adjacent obstructions as possible – because it’s designed sensitive to multipath interference. The second thing to remind you is that because the 4228HD is rather heavy, so make sure you securely mounted it on roof, eave or wall and keep it in a perfect vertical shape to prevent toppling.
And you may need a rotator to help you adjust the orientation to when you are surrounded by multiple transmitters of different channels. While the situation is different if you live in a big city area like NYC or LA where all of the transmitters are in the same location.
