Taking the lid off the Piano Box 12-note paper synth

Last year, Portugal's Catarina Mota was part of a New York hackerspace team that created a toy piano made from Jell-O (and some electronics) for a competition in Brooklyn, NY. Being a lover of mixing electronics with low-tech materials like fabric and paper, she has now created a paper box that opens up to reveal a 12-key touch piano/synthesizer sporting some cool LED light action. The Piano Box is built around an Arduino Mega board running the CapSense and Tone libraries, and features twin speakers, capacitive keys made from paper-covered copper tape, and some custom code that's available for free download to allow anyone to make their own paper synth.


After discovering that Jell-O and fruit were conductive, a small group of NYC Resistor members (Mota, Ranjit Bhatnagar, Mimi Hui and Astrida Valigorsky) embedded each of a number of food-based keys with its own food-safe silver pin, connected these up to an Arduino microcontroller and then used a metal utensil, gloves with conductive thread or even bare hands (so long as one hand touched the piano case and a key at the same time) to play the instrument. Versions of the prize-winning Resistor JelTone have been displayed and eaten at a number of exhibitions and festivals since first being created for the Jello Mold Competition at the Gowanus Studio Space in Brooklyn.

Mota told us that, even though the JelTone is polyphonic, requiring two hands or conductive materials to produce notes was less than ideal. While thinking about remaking the project in a new medium, fellow maker Will Byrd mentioned that creating musical instruments was the focus of classes he was teaching at Indiana University, with a few students looking into finding simple ways to create polyphonic instruments using Arduino.


"So, after some online research, Will and I sat one night and wrote the code for the Piano Box, which was greatly facilitated by the use of the CapSense and Tonelibraries (which are doing all the hard work of reading the capacitive sensors and generating the tones)," the co-founder of the openMaterials research group, Lisbon's altLab hackerspace and the fabriCulture project said. "After that I made the physical structure."

Mota used copper tape topped by paper for each of the touch sensors/keys, but says that any conductive material should work. Each sensor was connected to the Arduino Mega microcontroller, and in turn mapped to LED lights. The board was then hooked up to the speakers. The Piano Box makes use of five of the six available hardware timers to allow up to five tones to be played simultaneously.

"The speakers are just outputting pre-defined tones, which are generated as a square-wave at a frequency specified by the Tone library running on the Arduino," she explained. "In reality, the two speakers you see on the sides aren't necessary, since the little amplifier comes with a pretty decent speaker. I added them just for symmetry ... One thing I should have done, but haven't got around to yet, is to design and make resonating boxes out of paper – this would hopefully increase the sound quality."

"Since it's a one-octave toy piano there aren't many melodies that can be played on it and I'm not a musician myself, but in theory you could make a version with more keys."

Should you be inspired to build your own version, project materials are not going to break the bank and all the necessary code is freely available. Mota told us that she used copper tape, resistors, LEDs, paper and drinking straws. There's also a small amplifier and a pair of speakers. The most expensive purchase was the Arduino Mega and while there are cheaper ways to complete the build, beginners might find themselves struggling.

How many people out there like headphone cords? Probably not a great number, but audiophiles will tell you that hard-wired headphones offer far superior sound quality than their wireless counterparts. Sennheiser, however, would have us believe otherwise. The company states that thanks to its Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) technique, its new RS 220 wireless headphones sound like they've got a cord coming out of 'em.


DSSS, as described by Sennheiser, "is a frequency spreading process in which the output signal is spread to a width of 22 MHz by means of a specified bit sequence." This means that the audio data is transmitted simultaneously on several different frequencies, so if one frequency experiences interference, the data is still able to get through on one or more others.

The RS 220 system also doesn't assign an optimum signal volume to its digital data packages. This is a good thing, as it keeps the dynamic range of the music intact - some wireless systems average out the signal, so the quiet sections of a piece end up being louder than intended, and the loud parts quieter.


The headphones themselves incorporate dynamic transducers with neodymium magnets, have a frequency response of 19 to 21,000 hertz, and a maximum sound pressure level of 106 decibels. They are powered by a rechargeable battery pack, which offers eight hours of music playback per charge. Onboard controls allow users to adjust volume and balance, select tracks, and to switch between audio sources, as the transmitter has analogue, coaxial digital and optical digital inputs.

The transmitter puts out an uncompressed 2.4 GHz signal, which can reach the headphones' receiver at a distance of up to 100 meters (328 ft) within a clean line of sight, or 30 meters (98 ft) if not in the same room. It can also serve two sets of the headphones at once.

During those important early stages of learning to play guitar, when you need to grab every possible opportunity to practice, digital teaching aids like iPerform3D and the upcoming Rocksmith can be on hand whenever the mood grabs you. There are also solutions that make learning available wherever your instrument happens to be - such as Castiv's Sidekick (along with an iPhone and the Rock Prodigy app) - and it's to this camp that the Tepoe Guitar belongs. Rather than positioning the device screen at the end of the fingerboard, inventor Michael Tepoe Nash has sliced away a section of the upper horn of the guitar and placed a small computer there instead.

The guitar itself has a Maple neck, a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard, chrome hardware and a humbucker-single-humbucker pickup configuration. Looking down towards the neck, the learner is faced with a 24-bit, 16 million color, 4.3-inch LCD computer screen with physical, push-button controls that supports 720p high definition playback and has 8GB of internal storage (with expansion possible via SD card). Nash has pre-loaded the Tepoe Guitar's computer with over 30 video lessons, more than 800 instructional diagrams, a music theory e-book, and drum and backing tracks to which students can play along.

Users can also upload their own content - such as video lessons from a favored instructor - from any Windows 7, XP, Vista, and 2000 PC via the included USB port. The device is also capable of playing NES.net, GBA, and some 32-bit BIN and 64-bit games utilizing the game program of the guitar. The computer includes its own external speaker with eight different EQ settings but audio can also be routed to headphones or onward to an amplifier via a 3.5 mm jack.

"For now we only have this one electric model which is geared primarily to teach the beginner," Nash told Gizmag. "We do have plans on developing a more advanced model for the professional in the future similar to the earlier acoustic prototype, which has the capability of the contemporary laptop computer - including a digital recording studio, effects processor, Bluetooth, touch-screen, 60GB of memory, tablature editor, and many more features that will help the professional guitar player."

iDJ Live uses iDevices in portable DJ rig

iDJ Live is a portable one-piece DJ rig, that incorporates the user's iDevice for live mus...Perhaps you've entertained the idea of becoming a dance club DJ, but were intimidated by the thought of those expensive turntables and mixers, not to mention the logistics of lugging them around, along with stacks of LPs and/or CDs. If so, then you're the part of the target market for Numark's iDJ Live. The one-piece device features two turntable-like music-cueing decks, a mixer for cross-fading between tracks, and uses your own docked iDevice as its brains.

Compatible with iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, iDJ Live is designed to work with Algoriddim's Djay for iPad app, which is available from the App store - although it will also work with other Core MIDI-enabled apps. Users supply their own music files, which the app accesses from their iTunes library.



Tracks are loaded onto either of the two decks, which users then manually manipulate to cue up the music, perform transitions, and scratch. Besides performing live, users can also record mixes on the fly, for later playback. Should they want to make a trip to the loo, or simply realize that they have no aptitude for deejaying, they can also put the system on Automix mode.

A headphone/speaker split cable is included with the iDJ, allowing users to choose between listening to the tracks that they're cueing, or the music that they're playing. A little surprisingly, however, there's no mention of a microphone, so people on the dance floor won't be able to hear your "Now we're gonna kick it up Old School" or similar remarks.
It should also be noted that the system receives its power from the docked iDevice, so an AC adapter for said Apple product might be a good idea. Running on battery power, users can reportedly expect about six hours of performance time with an iPad 2, and three hours with an original iPad.

Ever since the bizarre-looking Birdfish guitar was first shown at Frankfurt's Musikmesse in 1995, there's always been a certain buzz surrounding new releases from acclaimed German luthier Ulrich Teuffel. The recent Summer NAMM in Nashville played host to a new high-end, light gray version of the teardrop-like headless Tesla guitar - featuring three custom pickups with noise controls, aircraft grade aluminum hardware and pickup covers, control knobs and fingerboard made from exotic timber.
Teuffel has been designing and crafting guitars since 1984 and in 1988 he started his own company to bring his ideas and concepts to life. After studying industrial design at the University of Art & Design in Kassel, Germany in the early 1990's, he emerged with some novel ideas for guitar creation. The first "out there" concept made reality was the award-winning but frankly odd, yet instantly recognizable, Birdfish. Its tone has won fans in many famous names, including ZZ Top's Billy Gibbons and Metallica's Kirk Hammett.


The curvy Niwa was next in line, with a sunken groove for the pickups and bridge and a body shape that hugs the body. Then came the Tesla, which sports contact points and buttons on the body to dial in different sounds and was originally designed as a seven-string model, as the long body and punchy, low end tone is said to lend itself to a bottom B string. A six-string version was made at the request of customers.

The latest developments from Teuffel's workshop are high-end Prodigy versions of the classic guitars, differing from their older siblings in the choice of hardware and tonewoods.

"The Prodigy series are each one-of-a-kind models with high-selected timbers and spot colors which I don't offer in my standard series," says Teuffel. "The Prodigy series is not limited but I only really make a few of them per year."

The latest is the Tesla Prodigy - described as a combination of a studio and classic model. The instrument's body is shaped from red alder, and the through neck is either Birdseye or Flamed Maple with a fingerboard of selected exotic woods like macassar ebony or ciricote, which are also used to cover the pickups and controls.

"All the hardware parts except the tune-o-matic bridge is made by me," Teuffel told Gizmag. "The headless tuner is made from lightweight aircraft-grade aluminum with steel thread inserts. The leg rest and the solid jack plate are also made from aluminum. All screws such as pickup screws, jack plate screws, strap pin screws, and so on, go into metal thread inserts in the body. It's very rigid. The headless locking nut is made from hardened brass. The action of the compensated nut is adjustable."
Teuffel also makes the wood-covered pickup - including the bobbins, wiring and magnetizing. The bridge pickup is a hot humbucker, and both the mid and neck pickups are split coils - which are said to have a warmer tone than those used on the standard Tesla. This version also sports noise controls which are activated through a mic, a shortcut kill switch or a 60-cycle hum and can make for some very interesting sonic experimentation.

Robert Majkut's Whaletone piano



The word "grand" just doesn't seem to cut it when describing this piano. The Whaletone's beautiful design evokes its sea-going namesake slowly emerging from the water and combines this with the technology of a high-end professional stage instrument in a way that's likely to appeal to both music and design connoisseurs.


The amazing instrument was exhibited in April, during Design Week in Milan, where it was seen by over 150,000 visitors. In some respects rather conservative, Whaletone shows there's a way to rethink classic design without changing it into a postmodern, unintelligible blob.

At its heart is a flagship Roland stage piano with built-in list of 500 sounds. Specifically, it uses Roland's SuperNATURAL Piano sound engine to generate the authentic sound of a string piano. There's also a PHA III Ivory Feel keyboard and some optional features such as a CD player, software to add sound modules, an LED display and an internal sound processor.


The person responsible for creating Whaletone is a notable Polish designer Robert Majkut, who specializes in luxurious interiors. Among these is the most expensive cinema interior in Beijing, China and closer to home, the cinema located in the Zlote Tarasy mall, in Warsaw.

There is a variety of ways to customize Whaletone including colors, gloss, material selection or individual adornments ... there's even a striking bright pink option.

djay: Algoriddim's slick portable DJ app for iOS devices

Algoriddim djay app for iOS devices



German audio software specialist Algoriddim has released its djay app for iPhone and iPad. Designed to turn an iOS device into a complete and portable DJ system, the app allows you to mix an iPod music library via a touch-turntable interface or can be set to mix automatically. It's intuitive, simple to use but deep enough for some serious djing.


The djay app opens to a virtual turntable with a responsive interface that shows no sign of lag while switching between the many modes and options. The software has direct access to the iPod library sorting songs by iPod playlist, artist, song, album and genre information. The search facility quickly finds music as you type and when importing tracks it takes just seconds to automatically scan for tempo and beat information. Beats per minute (BPM) are calculated on the fly with the beats themselves represented visually as a waveform along the top of the interface.

Each track is displayed as a spinning vinyl record on a turntable with album art in the center. You can touch and move the record to hear a scratching effect and spin the track forwards and backwards as another effect or to find your place on the waveform for the next transition. The software can be used in landscape orientation to display two turntables or in portrait for a larger view of one turntable.

Tools include a three band equalizer and mixer control to boost or minimize vocal, treble and bass, plus a tempo control and a sliding crossfader that enables the blending of one song into another, manually or automatically. The BPM of tracks can also be set to sync automatically to match the tempo of the current playing song. Scratching and transitions can be set to fade in and out, backspin, brake, reverse or change randomly. Specific parts of tracks can be easily looped with bounce looping from 1/16 of a beat to two beats for live remixing. Queue points can be auto saved along with all song data such as the BPM of songs and the waveform data. Original mixes are also able to be saved as AIFF files for sharing or later access.


Mixes can be streamed to Apple's AirPlay, to Apple TV or any AirPlay supported speaker dock, AV receiver and stereo system. Djay is able to split music to headphones and a speaker system via the Split Output mode for live DJing. This requires a stereo to mono splitter.

The app also takes advantage of iOS 4's multitasking ability and can be run in the background auto-mixing while surfing the net or playing games.

djay has become the main way I listen to music on my iPhone as the automix does a great job shuffling, auto syncing the tempo and mixing my playlists. It is also great fun messing around with my music, bounce looping, pitch bending, and all the other various tweaks you can perform using the software.


Imaginary Marching Band: Sensor-equipped glove mimics real-world instruments

A working prototype of the virtual trumpet

Bridging the gap between computer generated music and real-world instruments, the "Imaginary Marching Band" is a fledgling, open-source project that allows music to be created by imitating the actions of playing the real thing on a sensor-equipped glove. The work of Scott Peterman, a Masters student at Parsons New School Of Design in New York City, the prototype system uses MIDI data output from the gloves via USB to reproduce the full range of notes from instruments such as the trumpet and trombone.

The Imaginary Marching Band's glove utilizes an open source Arduinomicrocontroller and is designed to communicate with audio editing software like Garageband, Ableton and others.

There are currently six instruments in the "band" – a trumpet, trombone, tuba, snare drum, bass drum and cymbals. For the brass instruments, air pressure sensors are used for the mouthpiece so you are in effect blowing into your thumb to play. A rolling ball tilt switch sensor on the fingers measures the fingering action of playing the notes.

Peterman hopes to encourage others to experiment with the design and help grow the concept.

An actual band using the technology will be playing at various festivals and institutions over the coming months.

Axe-Fx II: Rack-mounted, all-in-one preamp/effects processor

Software-based guitar and amp emulators like Guitar Rig, AmpliTube and GarageBand have given players access to a multitude of sound and setups otherwise impossible to achieve without an unlimited budget, and a huge amount of storage space. While these might be perfect for the home or studio, musicians heading out on the road may want to invest in a more durable hardware-based, rack-mounted solution. Fractal Audio is about to unleash a beast of a rack-mounted, all-in-one preamp/effects processor billed as the most powerful instrument processor ever created.

The Axe-FX II is powered by two 600MHz dual-core Analog Devices TigerSHARC digital signal processors (DSP), which, according to Fractal Audio, gives it "more raw, real-time audio processing horsepower than anything available at any price." One DSP is in charge of everything to do with amp modeling while the other handles all of the effects and system tasks. The unit also has twice the onboard memory of previous models.

At its hearts is a brand new G2 amp modeling technology that's claimed to take amp modeling to a whole new level by digitally reproducing every part of a power amp, from the phase inverter and filter caps to speaker distortion and voice coil interaction. The system also features an 8-band equalizer to allow for precision tone tweaking without needing to add extra amp blocks to the chain and something called Virtual Vacuum Tube technology - a sort of digital replica of a vacuum tube.



The amp block gets new dynamic speaker modeling and players are offered 50 user can memory locations to store settings from the high resolution convolution cabinet emulator (which also has 64 factory preset cabs), including selections from the Redwirez and Ownhammer and designs from Jay Mitchell.

The Axe-Fx II has been given a dedicated 60-second loop function, updated effects and algorithms and more realistic sounding effects. The amp, chorus, drive, delay, flanger, phaser, pitch, and wahwah blocks are joined by two independent parameter sets called X and Y. The new buttons can act as user-defined quick jump keys for editing without needing to go through the grid, or for remote 2-channel switching of block settings. A TYPE control has been added to Chorus, Delay, Flanger, and Phaser effects to allow for easier settings adjustment and parametric EQ has been integrated into the Delay and Reverb blocks.

Users can also configure global blocks to synchronize favored sound settings across multiple presets. All settings can be saved to included backup memory for peace of mind.
The ins and outs

Balanced analog inputs to the rear and unbalanced 0.25-inch jack outputs benefit from Humbuster technology, which automatically detects and removes up to 20dB of ground noise from the signal and the instrument input at the front uses a dedicated analog-to-digital converter and a proprietary circuit for low noise performance. Both S/PDIF and AES input and output feature, as well as a 7-pin MIDI In and a selectable MIDI Out/Thru jack. The system is also MFC-101 MIDI foot controller-compatible. A USB port caters for MIDI-over-USB functionality and also allows users to monitor and process computer audio and record output to a PC or Mac.

In spite of all this effects processing power the system consumes less that 40W and offers near-silent operation. Of course, one downside to some hardware-based multi-effects and amp processors is their inability to grow and adapt to new trends and developments. Fractal Audio says that "the Axe-Fx II is well equipped for a future of free upgrades and updates in the tradition that established our commitment to product evolution."

iTunes in the Cloud and iTunes Match announced

Amongst countless other announcements in Apple's WWDC keynote today came official details on the long expected cloudification of iTunes. The famous "one last thing" this year was iTunes Match, which finally utilizes the scan and match technology Apple gained with its acquisition of Lala in late 2009.

Previously, if you bought music on your iPhone, you had to use the "Transfer Purchases" function of iTunes to pull the files back into iTunes, and then sync them onto your other devices. Now, up to 10 of your devices can be configured to have new music purchases pushed directly to them, or you can finally use a purchase history to do so manually.

Useful, but it's iTunes Match which is the real game changer.

For $24.99 a year, iTunes will scan all the music in your library (well, up to 25,000 files) and give you DRM-free 256Kbps AAC versions of those files. There's 18 million songs in the iTunes library, so most of your library will be in there (unless you sport a neckbeard and ride a fixie), and you can upload the ones that aren't.

Steve specifically mentioned that the service would work with ripped CDs, but we'd be surprised if your two terabyte collection of torrented music didn't work too.

A beta of iTunes in the Cloud will be released today, with iTunes Match available this fall.

Only a short time ago, if you'd asked me to describe a modern guitar effects unit, something like the GR-55 from Boss would probably have come to mind. Since the introduction of iPhone and iPad music creation apps like IK Multimedia's AmpliTube app, however, multi-effects processing and amp/cab emulation have risen up from the stomp box on the ground and into the hands of the player. Now DigiTech have announced a new unit which offers the best of both worlds. Docking an iPad in the iPB-10 Programmable Pedalboard allows guitarists to drag and drop a chain of effects using the accompanying app and then use the physical footswitches to control the action.
The fact that the iPad was practically everywhere at NAMM recently is testament to the power and versatility that music apps on such a device bring to players. For the most part though, players have to interface their instruments with Apple's tablet using something like the Apogee JAM or the iRig from IK Multimedia. With DigiTech's new iPB-10 Programmable Pedalboard, users actually slot Apple's tablet into the built-in docking bay and then hook up the instrument and amp to the back of the unit itself.


DigiTech has also launched its own specially-designed iPB-Nexus app for iPad that gives iPB-10 users the ability to design boards by drag and drop on the tablet screen and includes a MyTones library to store and organize presets. Players can choose to use other apps with the system but full functionality may suffer.

"The iPB-10 will stream a digital audio signal to any application that uses the digital audio input on the iPad," Scott Klimt, Marketing Lead at DigiTech, told Gizmag. "In our testing we've found that we can create a preset within iPB-Nexus app, run that sound into Garageband, add any additional effects within that application and record tracks. We're not able to control third party apps with the footswitches but you can run those apps while the iPad is docked in the iPB-10."

DigiTech is also currently working with application developers to incorporate more features into the Nexus app and has plans to offer users the chance to upload custom presets to a community portal and share them with others.

"The iPB-Nexus app for iPad brings a level of connectivity and sharing to musicians that never existed for presets," says Klimt. "Allowing users to share their presets with each other directly from their pedal within an online community of iPB-Nexus/iPB-10 users is one of the features that make this part of the future of guitar effects. Imagine the ability to search and load the perfect tone for any song without having to unhook all your gear, plug into your desktop computer, install the drivers, and wait for everything to update."

Up to ten different effects pedals can be included in any one chain, in any order. The Nexus app offers a choice of 87 different pedals - including various flavors of wah, distortion, chorus, flanger and phasers. Board design can be undertaken on a docked or undocked iPad, if the latter the iPB-10 will auto-sync with the Nexus app when the tablet is next docked.

"At this time users can assign up to 5 of those pedals to a footswitch A-E (top row)," Klimt explains. "Footswitches 1-5 (bottom row) are presets within a bank. There are 20 banks (1-20), each with 5 presets within each bank. Players have access to up to 100 through the footswitches. In a future update to the app there are plans to incorporate more advanced configuration options that could allow players to completely customize the layout and assignment of each footswitch within each preset."

Once satisfied with the effects, a user can then add one of 54 amp emulations - with numerous models from Mesa Boogie to Marshall and Fender to DigiTech's own - and one of 26 cabinets to the design and save the whole thing to one of a 100 preset locations for easy recall later on, although the Nexus app itself can store an unlimited amount of designs.

When a preset is chosen, individual pedals in the chain are brought in and out according to their footswitch assignment and a real-time performance view shows each pedal and its settings on the iPad display. Any loaded preset can be further tweaked as necessary and saved to the current or a different location as desired. Users also have the advantage of recalling different board designs for live, studio or rehearsal situations or even swapping between layouts during a song.

Interestingly, a user will still be able to choose from onboard presets even if there's no iPad in the cradle - although it won't be possible to alter the configuration, that can only be done using Apple's tablet computer.


To the rear of the cast metal unit, there's an instrument input, an amp loop, an effects loop, stereo line-out with an Amp/Mixer switch, stereo XLR outputs, external footswitch control, USB port, and a headphone jack.

The iPB-10 is powered by two Audio DNA2 DSP processors, offers 24-bit analog-to-digital conversion and a 44.1kHz sample rate, and is compatible with all models of iPad and iPad 2.
